Medical Trust Hospital was founded
in the year 1986. In order to provide comprehensive diabetic
treatment , regular follow up and the treatment of later
complications, a Diabetes clinic was instituted in 1998. The
clinic started functioning on 14th November, 1998 . Within the
first two years itself, the clinic has succeeded in installing
almost all the modern facilities for the diagnosis and treatment
of diabetes. The clinic functions on every Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Diabetes clinic which is a part of the Medical Trust
Hospital is situated by the M.C. Road , about one furlong south
of Kulanada junction and about 2 kms. north of Pandalam junction
in the district of Pathanamthitta in Kerala state, India. |

ObjectivesTo promote awareness about diabetes and
its complications among public;
To educate patients with the help of audio visual aids regarding various
aspects of diabetes
Providing efficient diabetes treatment to patients;
Regular follow up and treatment of later complications;
Conducting specialised studies and researches using the data collected
from the patients;
Organising diabetes detection camps at regular intervals in the nearby
areas.

Our Services
Patient
Education
The clinic has devised a number of schemes for patient
education. The patients who come to the clinic for the first
time are grouped together and they are given introductory
classes with the help of audio-visual aids. During their
subsequent visits advanced classes are given. Classes which deal
with various aspects of diabetes are conducted.
They include :
Investigations, Treatment, Diet Control, Later Complications,
Podiatry Care and Prevention. |
The classes are followed by panel discussions and Questions - Answer sessions. A team of efficient and well trained doctors and other technicians are engaged in preparing the study materials.
The clinic has set up a publication wing to publish pamphlets, magazines, books and audio- video cassettes to educate patients and their relatives. |

Intensive Diabetic Control and Education
Programme
A special scheme has been initiated by the clinic for the intensive treatment of Diabetes and the associated complications. The patient who wishes to undergo intensive treatment will be admitted for three days in the special ward reserved for this purpose. |

| All the routine investigations are done and treatment decided. Thorough investigations to detect further complications if any, are conducted at regular intervals during the next three days. |

| The patient is given diabetic diet from hospital during these three days. After taking into consideration, the patients' preferences, a detailed dietary chart will be provided by the dietician. Classes are conducted by experts with the help of audio-visual aids to educate the patient and intimate relatives to make them aware of the various aspects of diagnosis, treatment and later complications. Patients are given training in Yoga and exercises. Necessary study material , will be provided to the patients. The patients will have to undergo annual check up
also. |
Diet counseling and Dietary kitchen
A separate department has been set up for diet counseling under the supervision of a dietician. The patient's food habits are
analyzed and each patient is provided with a diet chart depending on his/her requirements. At every visit the diet prescribed is reviewed and necessary adjustments made.
A diabetic diet exhibition is conducted on all the clinic days which helps the patient to understand all the aspects of diabetic diet. A dietary kitchen also is set up to provide diabetic diet to the in patients admitted. The working of the kitchen is under the direct control and supervision of the dietician. |
Stress Management
A physiotherapy unit is set up in the hospital which provides training in stress management. For adequate stress management , Yoga practice is given to the patients. Yoga lessons specially designed for diabetic patients by Yogacharya Sri. Unniraman master of Pathanjali Yoga centre, Kozhikode, are provided to those patients who require them. Laboratory
A well furnished laboratory with all modern facilities is provided to ensure effective diagnosis and diabetic treatment. Investigations are done using sophisticated auto analysers including HbA1C, Microalbumin urea, Lipid profile.
Diabetic Eye Unit
Diabetic Eye Unit of the Diabetic clinic has facilities for conducting diabetic check up to detect diabetic retinopathy. IOL surgery for cataract is also done. Dr. Janardan MBBS, MS(ophth) and Dr. Vinu Janardan MBBS,DO are in charge of the diabetic eye clinic.

Diabetic Neuropathy and foot care clinic
Diabetes affects the leg in two ways.
1. Reduced blood supply due to peripheral vascular disease.
2. Neuropathy producing reduced sensational pain.
Early detection of diabetic neuropathy and peripheral vascular disease and initiation of adequate treatments help to reduce the incidents of foot and toe amputations in chronic patients. So in the diabetes clinic, we have given special importance for the detection of the foot complications. We have all the necessary investigation facilities including

Footwear for Diabetic Patients
As custom made footwear is essential for diabetic patients, the clinic has made arrangements to make footwear to meet the requirements of individual patients. On clinic days experts will be present to make footwear using micro cellular rubber as insole. The patients are taught to use such footwear in and outside their house.
Physiotherapy Unit
A physiotherapy unit also has been set up to suggest the required exercises to patients and provide training in stress management.
