Ayurveda, dating back 5000-10000 years is the oldest and most holistic medical system available on the planet today. The word Ayurveda comes from the Sanskrit, "Ayur" and "veda" which means the Science of life.

More than 700 years ago, a traditional Ayurvedic yogi traveled all the way from the Himalayas to Kerala, God's own country. His name was Athreya and his practice and treatment of the ancient science of Ayurveda near Kottayam, has now been passed down authentically to the present generation whose ideals are the same as that of its founder, Athreya.

Today we are proud to have Dr. Gireesh Athreya, D.A.M., a descendant of Athreya, who has not only been trained in traditional ayurvedic medicines and treatments but has also received international acclaim for his combination of the traditional with the modern.
In 1979, Dr. Gireesh established the Sri. Balakrishna Pharmacy and Nursing Center at Pulimood Junction, Kottayam as a tribute to his father. As consultant physician and owner of this pharmacy, Dr. Gireesh, provides not only ayurvedic medicines but also expert massages by well-trained male and female staff. 
Dr. Gireesh's wife, Dr. J. Padmadevi, B.A.M., an Ayurveda doctor in the Government Service, is also a well-reputed practitioner. As the granddaughter of the famous Ayurveda specialist, Varakal Raman Vaidyan, and niece of an Ayurveda College Professor, the Ayurveda passion is kept alive for generations in this family.
Treatments
Each treatment undertaken in Athreya is only started after an in depth consultation with our team of in house doctors. Once treatment started, the regimen of the guest is then according to what has been prescribed. This is to ensure that the goal of well-being is achieved during the time spent at Athreya.

PANCHAKARMA
Panchakarma (which means 5 steps or 5 actions) is a cleansing and rejuvenating program for the body and mind. It is well-known for its beneficial effects on the overall health and sense of well-being of an individual. Read more 

PIZHICHIL
This is a specialized treatment where hot oil is squeezed from a cloth all over the body.
This oil is continuously poured from a height above the patient with a subsequent massage which enhances the feeling of well-being. Since Ayurveda is tailor made, this is of course prescribed according to doctor's orders.

Apart from this all kinds of ayurvedic treatments and 'Suka Chikiltsa' are also given at Athreya Resorts under the supervision of Doctors.

Facilities
The treatment Center in Athreya is a multi-storied building located a few meters away from our cottages to ensure a peaceful environment. Each treatment undertaken in Athreya is only started after an in depth consultation with our team of in house doctors. Patients should trust their doctor and follow his recommendations. Once treatment starts, the regimen of the guest is then specifically according to what our doctor has prescribed. This is to ensure that the goal of well-being is achieved during the time spent at Athreya.  
Athreya has spacious multiple treatment rooms with all the needed ayurvedic equipment like the 'dronni' which is a long table designed specially for the specialized oil massage given by our competent and trained staff. A steam bath chamber is also available which is used for our famous rejuvenation therapy.
